Report of the ambassador’s× visit to the agha of the janissaries. On the tenth day of the month, a Thursday, the Austrian ambassador× visited the Agha of the Janissaries, Mehmed Agha. Before the ambassador× came, the big room had been adorned with flowers and fruits. For the ambassador×’s ride from the pier to the gate, a fully equipped horse was dispatched, while for his noblemen twenty saddled horses were dispatched. When the ambassador× arrived at six o’clock and entered the big room, the janissary agha came inside the room through the other door. The two men then went up [to the room where the reception would take place]. The agha sat down on his post and the ambassador× sat down on his right-hand side on a cushion. Afterwards, sweets and coffee were served, followed by the performance of vocalists and musicians. Then, [the group] transferred to Tekeli Pavilion where wrestlers performed. The vocalists performed again. Next, the dancer boys of the gardeners’ branch (bāġçıvān ḳolu) performed many games on the lower maidan. After the meal was eaten, [the following were presented]:
  • a fully equipped grey horse for the ambassador×, equipped with a leather-strap harness, silver stirrups, a Damascene print horse blanket, and the rest of the horse tack
  • embroidered fabric and 2 heavy kerchiefs, 2 pieces
  • embroidered fabric for the ambassador’s× inner circle, 28 each
  • and for the protocol registerer, broadcloth and fabric, 1 piece
