Accordingly, it is indispensably necessary and required henceforward to enforce about the priests who belong to the nation of Jesus — peace be upon him — and owe allegiance to the Roman pope the conditions written and recorded in the imperial letters of agreement that were issued during the felicitous times of my illustrious predecessors and noble forefathers of exalted pedigree who sleep in heaven and during my reign and times of eternal sultanate; in particular, [it is indispensably necessary and required to enforce] the noblest purview of the illustrious imperial sign and exalted orders granted and given as my favor and to protect and guard the merchants and guests as a requirement of friendship and sincerity. Therefore, I have issued this imperial, felicitous charter (nişān).The ancient friendship and the state of peace between my eternal sublime state and the Roman Emperor Charles, the laudable pride of the magnates of Christendom, was improved and the edifice of mutual confidence and reliance were consolidated and made firmer. Therefore, I have issued this imperial, felicitous charter (nişan).I command that, in whatever way the priests who owe allegiance to the Roman pope and Jesuits have been visiting the church called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre since the old days as per their old rituals and, in particular, in whatever way they have been visiting Mount Zion, they shall [continue] their visits as before in the same way according to their rituals. Contrary to the old practices that have continued to this day, they shall not be interfered with or attacked by the subjects of my sublime state or by the community of customary law (ehl-i ʿörf ṭāʾifesi) with claims of money or under other pretexts. Using my previously issued noble order—inscribed with my royal imperial rescript—concerning the reparation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as an excuse, the Greek community, in opposition to the noble orders, imperial rescripts, and glorious imperial signs issued during the felicitous times of former sultans, shall not make any claims or dispute against those who follow the Roman pope. Great care shall be taken and attention shall be paid to protect and guard them and for them to be tranquil thanks to imperial protection. Thus shall they know and [have confidence] in the noble mark.I command that, in whatever way the priests who owe allegiance to the Roman pope and Jesuits have been visiting the church called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre since the old days as per their old rituals and, in particular, in whatever way they have been visiting Mount Zion, they shall [continue] their visits as before in the same way according to their rituals.
