Decree to the agha of the janissaries Mehmed Aġa and to the imperial chief gardener: General [Damian Hugo] Count of Virmont—may God end his days propitiously—who came to my gate that is the center of state as grand ambassador from the Roman emperor, the paragon of the great commanders of the community of Messiah, sent a petition to my threshold of felicity [about the following matter]: Ten thousand medres of wine is required for his own consumption and for his people. He requested my most noble order so that when he, as per the permission granted, transports to his residence at Galata the ten thousand medres of wine he purchased from around [Istanbul], henceforward, he shall not be injured by the voivode of Galata, superintendents, and officers with claims of money under the names of tribute, fees, and customs duty or under other pretexts and no one shall prevent its transportation. Upon his request and by virtue of friendship, it has been my order that the transportation of only ten thousand medres of wine for a single time shall not be prevented. I command that, you shall act in accordance with my order issued and, in the way described, you shall not allow anyone to prevent the transportation to [the ambassador’s] residence in Galata of the ten thousand medres of wine that the aforesaid ambassador and his people purchased around for a single time for their own consumption. You shall not have the voivode of Galata, superintendents, and officers claim money under the names of customs, tribute, fees, and contribution or under other pretexts. In addition, attend to the matter diligently so that no charges shall be levied more than the fixed amount and there shall be no possibility of recurrent charges. So shall you know!
