[1] Translation of the letter sent to the royal threshold of the sultan× by the ceaser of Austria×. To our exalted and illustrious neighbor and friend, his majesty, the powerful and magnificent Sultan Mustafa Han×, the ruler of the Anatolia× and Rumelia× and the house of Osman, from Leopold×, forever august, the elected emperor of the Roman Empire× by the grace of God Almighty, king of Austria×, Hungary×, Dalmatia×, Croatia×, and Slavonia×, archduke of Austria×, duke of Burgundy×, Brabant, Styria×, Carinthia×, and Carniola×, margrave of Moravia× and Luxemburg×, duke of Upper and Lower Silesia×, Württemberg and Teck×, prince of Swabia×, count of Habsburg×, Tyrol×, Görz×, Kyburg×, and Gradisca×, landgrave of Alsace×, marquis of the Holy Roman Empire×, Burgau×, Upper [Lusatia]× [2] and Lower Lusatia×, and lord of the marquisate of Slavonia×, Port Naon and Salines, following the extension of greetings with wishes for perfect health and all-encompassing happiness; to our exalted and illustrious neighbor and friend, his majesty the sultan: for the purpose of further strengthening the powerful friendship and favorable neighborliness between our realms, and in order to affirm and fortify the peace and accord that was agreed upon last year under fitting and appropriate titles, we sought to publicly confirm and reiterate this treaty through [sending of] grand ambassadors by both sides, thereby desiring to make known to many nations and peoples, with an inexpressible sense of joy and celebration, the evident brilliance of this momentous occasion. Hence, it is proposed that the witnesses and heralds of this blessed and fortunate event—our ambassadors—be exchanged with customary receptions at the border, and that each party then return to their respective capitals. Accordingly, when we learned of the departure of our ambassador× from the Ottoman lands, we ensured that Ibrahim Pasha×, your exalted excellency’s ambassador, after completing his ambassadorial duties here, was treated with the utmost imperial respect and honor, and that he was sent back with the same level of courtesy in an appropriate manner. [3] Your excellency’s esteemed ambassador× made it clear to us how deeply you are committed to maintaining the well-being of all and adhering to this peace and amity. Thanks to this mutual rest and security, achieved for all the people, the subjects, who have long suffered the calamities of warfare and struck by disaster, have now gained the long desired respite. If we continue, in accordance with divine will, to uphold and obey this peace and accord with the respect and honor it deserves throughout many years to come, we are confident and sure, without any doubt or uncertainty, that they will endure. Moreover, the aforementioned ambassador× has been fully informed of our own sincere intentions. He has seen, firsthand, the particular care and diligence we have shown regarding the demarcation of boundaries, and he is well aware of the attention we have given to this matter. He will convey to your glorious majesty, exactly as it is, the goodwill and inclination toward peace that we share on this matter. It is also our wish that the ambassador× be favorably regarded, as he has diligently fulfilled his duties as an envoy and has carefully completed his service with great honor and commendation, befitting the increase in friendship between the two states. In conclusion, we express our heartfelt prayers for your continued health and complete happiness, with the hope that the formalities of friendship will be perpetuated between us. [4] Written in Vienna× in the year 1700, in the forty-third year of our reign as [Holy] Roman× emperorship, the forty-sixth year of our reign as king of Hungary×, and the forty-fifth year as king of Bohemia×, mid-October. Your excellency's faithful neighbor, Leopold×.
