[1] The translation of the letter from Graf von Starhemberg×, the chief minister of the Roman emperor, to his majesty, the most fortunate and prosperous grand vizier×: After presenting my most excellent and prosperous sultan with gestures of honor, courtesy, and ceremonies of friendship, the following is communicated and presented for your consideration in a friendly manner: Through the Sublime State×’s grand ambassador to the ceasar×, the most esteemed and honorable İbrahim Pasha×, the expression of your excellency’s perfect friendship and affection was communicated. Your letters, filled accordingly with compliments, have been received and delivered; your letter has been accepted with reverence and respect, and I observed with great joy—so great that it is beyond description—the desire and inclination of both our sovereigns to preserve and safeguard the peace and harmony between the two mighty rulers. That letter serves as a clear and significant sign of the established sincerity and good intentions of his majesty, the prosperous sultan. [It is understood that] the aforementioned pasha× has been appointed to this special diplomatic mission, because besides being adorned with commendable qualities and praiseworthy manners, which make him distinguished, he is also notable for his demeanor that have earned him respect. His conduct is most fitting to reinforce and fortify the peace, harmony, and friendship between the two states, and to complete all necessary arrangements for peace and reconciliation. In discussions with the ambassador×, the matters concerning the well-being of the impoverished captives have been resolved in a manner worthy of the dignity of both states, with the agreed-upon matters pending acceptance, approval, and reinforcement by the Sublime State×. Regarding Novi×, the region also known as Cedid, the difficulties that have arisen between the boundary commissioners have been resolved by the earnest efforts of the grand ambassador. It is also our hope that, again through mediation, appropriate and lawful solutions will be found. Additionally, concerning the fortresses in Croatia×, whether they are to be evacuated or demolished, the unresolved issues regarding the delineation and distinction of the borders should be completed. Subsequently, it has been recommended that after reaching the other side of the Danube×, the remaining unresolved border issues be resolved in accordance with the conditions of the peace and reconciliation agreements, ensuring the welfare and tranquility of the subjects of both states. The aforementioned ambassador pasha will inform you of all these matters. It is well known that your prosperous side has always shown a firm inclination toward the increase of the existing friendship, peace, and harmony between the two states. Your commitment and efforts toward the completion and fulfillment of these matters are well recognized. May the Almighty God grant you continued health, happiness, fortune, and long life. Written at the fortress of Vienna× on the sixteenth day of May.
