Abstract
In this supplementary letter Oettingen-Wallerstein reports on the money he brought for Alexandros Mavrokordatos and Râmî Mehmed Paşa promised to them at the Karlowitz peace conference and explains his reluctancy to pay the money. Initially, the grand ambassador intended to pay the money only after favourable resolutions have been achieved with the help of the two Ottoman officials, but the English ambassador William Paget argued strongly in favor of paying them beforehand, fearing for his own standing and credibility as a mediator at Karlowitz.;
The dispute with Paget takes increasingly sharp turns and even leads to accusations, leading Oettingen-Wallerstein to suggets placing the money with Paget, which was refused.;
At last, Oettingen-Wallerstein gave in to Pagets urging and agreed to inquire with Mavrokordatos and the reis ül-küttab on how to pay the money in secret, yet both recipients declined the money, explaining it to be too dangerous to their lives in the Ottoman government, since they are already getting threats for having signed the treaty of Karlowitz in the first place.;
Alexandros Mavrokordatos adviced Oettingen-Wallerstein to take the money back home and hoped for another opportunity to get it in a safer way and to not consult the reis ül-küttab on this.;
Paget suggested to compensate Mavrokordatos in a different way and Oettingen-Wallerstein negotiated to pay the debts the city of Debrecen and the estates of Transylvania owed Mavrokordatos including interests instead. He received written confirmations of this and advises the emperor to reimburse himself with the debtors this way and expresses his content with saving money for both emperor and debtors while keeping the Ottomans happy.;
Lastly, Paget demanded the money be transferred to his residence, since the whole issue was just delayed and will be conveyed later, which Oettingen-Wallerstein refused.
