Abstract
Oettingen-Wallerstein reports that three alleged deserters of French origin from Petrovaradin were detained by him and that this lead to a clash with the French embassy since Charles de Ferriol saw them falling under his jurisdiction, not the Habsburgs'.;
After both sides rejected the demands and offers made, the French assaulted and captured three members of Oettingen-Wallerstein's retinue while the grand ambassador was busy negotiating with Alexandros Mavrokordatos. The latter alerted the grand vizier to prevent the conflict to turn into serious bloodshed, since the French in the city allegedly already prepared for fighting by barricading and arming themselves.;
The grand vizier requests both sides deliver the detainees to him for interrogation to decide on the matter. Oettingen-Wallerstein regards this as a positive development for him, presenting his peaceful and calm intentions and heightening his standing in Constantinople, though he rejects the attemted mediation on grounds that his subjects are not to be treated the same as the criminal deserters.;
But since the situation is dangerous and Oettingen-Wallerstein sees no possible gain in it due to his limited possibilities without Ottoman support, he agrees to a compromise mediated by the English and Dutch ambassadors to exchange the detainees via the Dutch embassy.;
Finally Oettingen-Wallerstein lists the main reasons for his conduct regarding not answering the French demands to prepare Vienna for a possible aftermath with Versailles.
