Abstract
The imperial commissaries dispatched a messenger to Buda, demanding the release of Kurtz by imperial decree, with the ultimatum that they would not engage in negotiations otherwise. Despite this, the pasha of Buda persistently refused to release the envoy, citing various pretexts. Gábor Bethlen, through the intermediary of the kaymakam Mehmed Gürci, secured representation at the Habsburg-Ottoman commission. Kurtz lodged a formal protest with the pasha of Buda, but to little avail, and requests further instructions from the emperor. His correspondence is not encrypted, but instead to be delivered discreetly by a trusted individual. In the commission, the emperor's prospects appear favorable; although the Turks are making substantial demands, it is crucial that they are not permitted to prevail. Their primary objective is to secure the villages surrounding Esztergom. Ahmed Bey, aspiring to the position of chief commissary, offers his mediation services, although he is unlikely to succeed in recovering Vác and Lippa or in securing war reparations. To achieve the primary objective, the restoration of peace at Zsitvatorok, compromises will be necessary on all sides. Kurtz urges the emperor to persist in demanding his release.
