Abstract
14 days ago, Kurtz had reported that his final audience with the sultan had gone well. Since then, he has also bidden farewell to the viziers. The mutual desire for peace between the two rulers was confirmed. Gábor Bethlen has not paid the tribute for Transylvania for years, and his envoys brought only modest gifts on the occasion of the sultan’s accession to the throne. The Transylvanians’ aim is to set the sultan against the emperor and to present themselves as humble vassals and protectors of Ottoman interests. Kurtz argues that the only way for the Ottomans to avoid war with the emperor is to refuse to support Bethlen. The envoy wants to know the emperor’s intentions, because if he attacks the prince, he will have to justify his action accordingly. The Ottomans would probably take him under their protection, because the kaymakam Gürçi Mehmed is an old friend of Bethlen. However, they would be unlikely to intervene in the eastern Hungarian territories formerly annexed to Transylvania.
