Abstract
The emperor sent a special courier to Kurtz with news of Gábor Bethlen and the peace negotiations, but he has not arrived in Constantinople yet. Nevertheless, Kurtz did not postpone his audience with the sultan. Bethlen Gábor’s envoys to the Porte have also not arrived yet. Kurtz will be in Constantinople for at least another 3-4 weeks. If the courier will not arrive by this time, Sebastian Lustrier will take further action. It is preferable that the resident manages the affairs at the Porte, because he is not expected to act with the same pomp and through constant gift-giving. It is feared that the dignitaries will be replaced again, which is why the farewell audience had to be held now, with the appropriate honours. The sultan was committed to peace and the pasha of Buda had been ordered to do the same. The Porte has no interest in going to war with the emperor at this time, and Bethlen is not supported, but it is nevertheless necessary to be cautious, because if the prince of Transylvania is attacked, the Porte will defend him. The 30,000 thallers promised for his mission have still not been received in full. He has been able to redeem only the promissory note he gave to Ali Agha, who, as the agent of the pasha of Buda at the Sublime Porte, is doing the most for the emperor’s cause. Bethlen’s envoys and the exact date of his departure from Constantinople will be described later.
