Abstract
Kurtz has been refused permission to depart from Constantinople on the pretext that the roads are impassable because of the winter. He was to leave with the new pasha of Eger, Ahmed. Ahmed asks the emperor for gifts in return for his future services, but Kurtz believes the pasha does not have enough authority to do so. He will verify this suspicionon his arrival in Buda. Kurtz is severely short on money, can no longer pay the dignitaries of the porte, and urges supplies. He has already reported on important matters through Sofia, Venice and Belgrade.
