Abstract
Since his last letter, dated 23 December 1623, Kurtz has received no news from the imperial court, and this is very detrimental to the representation of the emperor’s interests in Constantinople, since the envoy is forced to base his actions on vague rumours. He learned from the Ottomans and other sources that the emperor concluded an armistice with Gábor Bethlen for eight months and that the Ottoman troops supporting him had been recalled. He urgently needed money, as without it nothing could be achieved at the Sublime Porte, and without sufficient gifts he would not receive a private audience with the grand vizier. Ali Agha, the agent of the governor-general of Buda could be an important promoter of his cause, so he offered him 8,000 thalers and asked him for a further 5,000 thalers for the grand vizier, in exchange for a bond. Kurtz also expects him to help prevent the inclusion of points contrary to the emperor’s interests in the credentials of the pasha of Buda for peace negotiations and to continue to provide news and cooperate with the resident Lustrier after the envoy’s departure. The ambassador would like to receive confirmation of these conditions from Ali Agha. He urgently requires the promised bill of exchange from Vienna to cover his expenses.
