Abstract
Because of the suspicions of the Ottomans, he did not report his arrival to the emperor on the 9th of November. His messenger from Belgrade arrived just in time before his audience with the sultan, where Kurtz presented the gifts sent from Vienna. He also visited the grand vizier and the other viziers, who promised to recall the Ottoman troops sent to support Gábor Bethlen and to give the pasha of Buda full authority to start peace negotiations. The sultan's instruction to the governor-general incorrectly states that the emperor will send an annual tribute to the Porte with an own envoy. Neither the emperor nor the Empire would accept to do so. The Ottoman government is only willing to make peace in word, but supports Bethlen in deed. The emperor had promised Kurtz 3,000 imperial thalers through Bonacina, but so far he has not received them. The money is urgently needed to bribe the dignitaries and also because of the dearness of Constantinople, as the provisions given by the sultan are also scarce. Sebastian Lustrier shall report on the general situation of the Ottoman Empire. Abaza Pasha is approaching Constantinople, perhaps in collusion with the sultan to curb the overwhelming power of the janissaries. Lustrier serves very well. PS. Hoping to leave Constantinople as soon as possible, Kurtz has already taken former agent Giovanni Paolo Damiani to him. The accusations against Starzer are untrue, he served the emperor impeccably at the Porte.
