Abstract
Due to illness, Kurtz left Komárom only on the 4th of September, arriving in
Buda on the 7th. On the 9th, he appeared before the pasha for an audience. The
gifts with him are not appreciated by the Turks, especially clocks
are superfluous, he needs money in cash instead. He promised 25,000 thalers to the
pasha and 4,000 to his kihaya in case of completing his mission in Constantinople
successfully. He asked the pasha to stop the raids on the border and that no
one should support the emperor’s enemies. The mutual grievances made it necessary
to set up a joint commission. Kurtz urged for the release of the Christians captured
during Gábor Bethlen’s campaign, which had already been promised to Cesare Gallo,
in exchange prisoners from Győr shall be released. He also requested the
acceptance by the Ottoman side of the new Hungarian coins minted in Bratislava.
The position of Sufi Mehmed Pasha at the
sultan’s court does not appear to be a strong one . Gábor Bethlen is bribing everyone at the Porte, it will be
difficult to compete with him, so Kurtz asks for more money to be sent. He wants
news constantly sent from the Viennese court. He leaves on the 13th of September.
During his stay in Buda, two Transylvanian envoys arrived at the pasha’s court, who
refused them in exchange for the above-mentioned sums promised by the Habsburg envoy.
