Following the presentation of abundant prayers and praises worthy of friendship, let it be known that:</gams:text><qhod:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922" /></qhod:Text><qhod:Text rdf:about="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922#p.2"><gams:text>A diffusely detailed register from Üveys Pasha – commander of the noble commanders – who is currently the governor of Buda – has arrived at the glorious court of my felicitous, august, and fortunate sultan – may God glorify his supporters and multiply his power; a court that is the refuge of exalted sultans and the sanctuary of powerful rulers. Üveys Pasha has reported that since he arrived in Buda, contrary to the treaty and trust between you and our felicitous sultan, there have been incursions and border violations into the well-protected domains, a considerable number of livestock have been driven away, captives have been taken, and some people have been martyred. That is, there have been attacks. We have penned an exact copy of this register and sent it to you for your knowledge. In addition to the matters we previously wrote about, the following events have occurred:</gams:text><qhod:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922" /></qhod:Text><qhod:Text rdf:about="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922#p.3"><gams:text>In the border regions of Bosnia and Klis, an infidel by the name of Çendran and the accursed Zrinski gathered a substantial number of infidels and, with their arms, they approached a location near the border. Should a retaliatory action be similarly taken from the upper region as they did, their plan was – according to their seditious intentions and deficient minds – to violate the well-protected domains of the sultan. Before this, in the border region of Bosnia, they bombarded the fortress of Ostrožac with cannons, captured it, and martyred the Muslims inside. Similarly, they bombarded and captured a fortress by the name of Cazin, martyring the men inside. In the border region of Klis, they likewise bombarded and seized the fortress of Drežnik, capturing it. While the family and men of Ali Agha, a retired captain (beşlü ağa), were on their way to a fortress called Bostanice, the infidels of the Fort Sisak attacked and captured them; these same infidels later approached a fortress within the sultan’s well-protected domains known as Dunavci, martyred six individuals, and captured eight others. Following this, they came to the Fort Cazin, seized two men, and during the repair of the aforementioned fortress, they captured the patrolling captain along with his horse, taking him as a prisoner, repeating this act once more. At , they captured the subjects and demanded ransom for their release. That such attacks and violations occur without interruptions has been repeatedly reported to the exalted throne’s foot, and it has been comprehended and understood through the sultan’s world-encompassing royal and noble knowledge. Thereupon,[the sultan] commanded that since acts contrary to the treaty have occurred, efforts should be made and care should be taken to ensure that whatever is necessary is done. However, the matter was deferred to await your response and the news that will arrive from your side, so that actions may be taken accordingly.</gams:text><qhod:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922" /></qhod:Text><qhod:Text rdf:about="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922#p.4"><gams:text>Indeed, do not the attacks and violations in the sultan’s well-protected domains in Buda, as mentioned above, and the seizure of fortresses, martyring of men, and taking of captives in the regions of Bosnia and Klis, contrary to the treaty and trust, invalidate the agreement between us? When troublemakers emerge on your side and aggressions occur, how can the warriors(ghazis) within the sultan’s well-protected domains be restrained? Will they not, in their innate valor and bravery, rise to defend the noble religion of Islam? If your side does not remain inactive, how can the warriors on this side be pacified? In any case, they diligently perform their duties without fault. This does not imply that your cavalry and infantry should remain idle while mischief and aggression are carried out by the people on our side. Such a misunderstanding should not arise. Moreover, every matter has been detailed and clarified in the felicitous letter of agreement previously issued by our honorable sultan.</gams:text><qhod:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922" /></qhod:Text><qhod:Text rdf:about="https://gams.uni-graz.at/o:graviz.smp.l.15790922#p.5"><gams:text>These emerging circumstances and actions are in direct violation of all of the letters of agreement [issued by the sultan]. Given this situation, when these matters were brought to the attention of your envoy at our felicitous and exalted court, he responded as follows: “The reality is not as you describe. No such actions have occurred in the border regions.[Our troops] are merely addressing the munitions needs of their own fortresses. However, since you have received such reports, I shall inform my lord – who does not condone such behavior. Those who act in violation of the treaty and trust will be dealt with accordingly. Great care and diligence are taken to uphold the conditions of the treaty, and he has no desire to see it broken. Your envoy’s courier has been sent along with our courier. When this courier reaches you, take to heart the content of the glorious letter, filled with words as precious as pearls sent by our sultan. If you are indeed committed to maintaining the peace and harmony between us and have no desire to see the treaty broken, then – per the terms of the covenant and trust – return the cattle, goods, and captives listed in the Governor of Buda’s aforementioned register. Let the perpetrators of mischief and wrongdoing be dealt with so decisively that it serves as a warning to others, preventing them from pursuing a path contrary to the treaty and trust. Always adhere to the conditions of the treaty and trust. Allow no deviation from them, so that our tax-paying and non-tax-paying subjects may live in tranquility and no one engages in acts of aggression contrary to the covenant. These matters have been detailed and clarified many times before in the imperial letters of agreement and the advice-filled letters sent from our side in good faith. As a result, a letter was sent to the Bey of Tata, inquiring about the nature of these actions that are contrary to the treaty.
