Abstract
In his letter to Rudolf II, Sokollu Mehmed Pasha condemned breaches of peace and treaties along the Ottoman borders and reported incidents of aggression and the seizure of fortresses by Habsburg commanders. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha highlights instances where Ottoman subjects were martyred, captured or subjected to raids and plunder. He urges Rudolf to restrain his commanders and enforce the terms of the treaty, emphasising the commitment to peace. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha warns of repercussions if violations continue and stresses the need for mutual respect and compliance to maintain stability. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha writes to emperor Rudolf II that the Beylerbey of Ofen has reported about raids on Ottoman territory from the Habsburg side, with several castles taken and cattle and people being taken away. He demands that Rudolf return the kidnapped Ottoman subjects and stolen livestock and goods and that the perpetrators be severely punished in order to deter others from doing the same. Should the attacks continue unabated, however, the Muslim soldiers would be allowed to proceed as they see fit and complaints from the Habsburg side would no longer be considered. Rudolf should therefore keep his men in check and also send the two expected gifts as quickly as possible.
