Laudable pride of the great commanders of Christendom, the elite of the illustrious magnates in the community of the Messiah, arbiter of the universal affairs of the community of the Nazarene, possessor of the trains of majesty and glory, possessor of manifestation of splendor and laudable pride, king of Vienna and emperor of the Romans, King Maximilian, may he end his days propitiously. Following the presentation of many prayers and praises that are worthy of your empire and the honorable and venerable friendship and neighborliness between us, here is the friendly communication: In your sincere letter, you declared that you have not instigated any action contrary to the noble consent of His Majesty, the prosperous Ruler of the inhabited quarters of the world, nor have you disturbed the peace and amity established between us. Furthermore, you assured us that no troops have marched on to the provinces of Transylvania and Poland and [you also declared] your commitment to upholding and preserving the peace and amity properly and that you are about to send the tax of friendship agreed upon among us. The truth of the matter is that such a situation was not expected from your empire. Your nobility knows that the province of Transylvania is conquered by the overwhelming strength of our prosperous Ruler’s noble forefathers and great ancestors and, under his shadow of prosperity and protection, the people of the province of Poland live in tranquility and carefree from their enemies. It is a province that flourished by his protection. The lords (begs) and notables of that province are peers to other beys under his threshold of sovereignty. Thus, it is certain that he will not give his noble consent to interventions to that province from outside. In your desirable letter, you asked about the mobilization of troops along the frontiers of the well-protected dominions when there are no developments or movements on your side. It shall not remain hidden or a secret to your majesty, it was reported to us that the Nemçe(Habsburg) troops were on the move and likely they could march on to Transylvania. Therefore, an order was issued for mobilization to ward off mischievousness and to protect the country. Then, it became completely clear that there was no movement on your side. Upon that, before your current letter arrived – for the strengthening of the pillars of peace and amity – numerous warnings and reiterations have been sent to His Majesty Vizier Mustafa Pasha, the commander of Buda; to the Governor General(beyler-bey) of Timişoara; to Ferhad Beg, the Provincial Governor (sanjak-bey)ofBosnia; and to the commanders along the frontier to dismiss the troops and to properly avoid causing any situation in violation of the treaty, unless there was a situation on your side that violated the peace. A firm noble decree was dispatched to each of them independently. It is certain that if the conditions of peace and treaty are observed on your side, they will be cared and observed by us. However, giving rise to occurrences on your side contrary to the treaty does not stop. For instance, the troops deployed at the Senj Fortress do not stay calm. The mischievous around the fortress take refuge there and, from there, plunder and harm the villagers dwelling in the lands of the sultan around the Klis frontier and take captives. Especially, the non-Muslim subjects and inhabitants of the well-protected domains who are taken to Frankish lands as captives are released by paying their fees and come back to the Senj Fortress over Venice, either through land or sea. The mischievous at Senj enslave the newly released captives one more time and set a price for them. There is no end to the captives who submitted such complaints. In a recent incident, one such Muslim captive presented his case to the imperial council. He [reported that] when he approached on rowboat to the area of the Fortress of Senj with a group, your commander at Senj sent some mischevious men who captured and enslaved that Muslim. He was then taken to the fortress of Nagykanizsa, where a price was set [for his release]. The captive Muslim told them: “There are merchants in Venice who know me; they will pay my ransom.” Consequently, he transferred himself to Venice. When he arrived there, he went to the Doge and reported that some mischievous men from the aforesaid Senj fortress of yours had captured him from the sea. Thereupon, the Doge released that Muslim. He eventually made his way to Constantinople [and] submitted his complaint to the imperial council. That Muslim has been also sent to your envoy situated here and reported in detail what the commander of your fortress [Senj] has been doing. Your envoy is about to report the case to you. Now, the deeds of the commander in your fortress [Senj] and the plunder and damage caused by him on Muslim captives and subjects in violation of the treaty is known by everyone. No proof is required anymore. To show your desire to strengthen and reinforce the structure of peace and amity, either demolish the Senj Fortress or punish the corrupt commander in it and appoint as the commander of that fortress[Senj] an upright man who appreciates peace and amity as well as tranquility and welfare. Those who are in that fortress first instigated the trembling of peace and security; for us it must be demolished. Accordingly, you shall realize what is worthy of peace and amity and not waste a single minute in observing and protecting the peace and treaty. You shall not delay the tax that was agreed between us and send it in a timely manner. Written in the second third of the month of Safar the victorious, in the year nine hundred and eighty-four. At the abode of the protected city of Constantinople. May God protect from all evil.
